Putting more muscle into its XDCAM line of disc-based TV production gear, Sony late yesterday unveiled a cart machine that can hold up to 640 discs. The new system (PDJ-A640) complements the pre-existing 80-disc machine (PDJ-C1080).
Both robotics-controlled cart systems can be used for automated ingest and play-to-air transmission, for short- to mid-term archival storage or for on- and off-line archiving.
“Since its launch, a key feature of the XDCAM system has been its archival and storage capabilities, allowing users to quickly and easily access data,” said Bob Ott, vice president of optical and network systems for Sony Electronics. “These cart systems highlight these characteristics and also provide professionals with greater production flexibility.”
The new cart machine can interface with up to four separate XDCAM decks, either the PDW-1500 or the PDW-F70, which was introduced in January. The older PDJ-C1080 is only compatible with the PDW-1500.
The carts are compatible with PDJ-CS10 cart interface software, which enables connectivity between middleware application software via the FTP/CIFS protocols.
Sony gave no price on the PDJ-A640 cart, but said it would be shown at NAB and available in June. The PDJ-C1080 is currently available for $72,500.
The PDJ-CS10 software should be available in June with for about $15,000, Sony said.
In January, Sony extended the XDCAM family with high-definition products—two camcorders (PDW-F350 and PDW-F330) and two decks (PDW-F70 and PDW-F30). Yesterday, it offered four interface boards for integrating the new HD products into TV stations and other facilities. Available in June, each board is priced at $2,000.
What else will be new from Sony at NAB?
- A 3X HD super slow motion camera system. List price: $270,000.
- A HD video communications system with camera and IP link. List price: $36,000.
- Two HD videocassette recorders. Price to be determined.
